Cool XP ICS & Linux

After 6 cd burns and many downloads i've now got mandrake linux running on my pc. I have 2 other pcs in a network, and for the time being the gateway pc is running xp and the other 2 share the net connection. How can i get my linux pc to recognize the windows gateway and use its net connection? I'm thick as well as a newbie!!

Assuming your local, internal network settings are:
NetMask = 255.255.255.0
IP range = 192.168.1.0-192.168.1.255
Broadcast = 192.168.1.255
IP address of your Linux box = 192.168.1.10
this should do it (this is off the top of my head, to be sure check the manpage for ifconfig):
Code:
/sbin/ifconfig eth0 up netmask 255.255.255.0 bcast 192.168.1.255 192.168.1.10
Good luck!

P.S. If you're running RedHat, there's a more "civilized" way of doing this.

i think that ifconfig goes like this
ifconfig eth0 inet 192.168.1.10 up

you have to put default route alse
route add default gw 192.168.1.1
If your gateway is @ 192.168.1.1

you have to put dns server in
/etc/resolv.conf

but to set it up on boot time

put parameters in
/etc/sysconfig/network
+
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0

(text is probably there so you just need to setup proper values)

Hi... I have the same problem...
i have a network running with 6 pcs , with Window 2000 server.
When i install redhat on one PC as a server, it ask for the IP address etc... my linux box works okie and got access to the internet. But however when i reset my server for some reason, the linuxbox can't get into the net....
wat i thought might be the problem is, the server use DHCP to allocate ip to its workstation, so when the server is reset, the linuxbox need to get the new IP from the server... It looks like it can't talk to the server....
Any advice.... i'm thinking of reinstall the linux box... ;-)...

Thanks in advance.
Zorro
