XP Fedora Core2 home network

I'm trying to set up a home network between FC2 and XP pro. The Fedora box is supposed to connect to the internet thru the windows box but i'm having 0 luck getting this to work. I really don't know where to start as im totally new to networking and almost as new to linux. and pointers in the right direction would be greatly apprieciated.

The setup is as follows.

XP box is connected to cable modem via USB
XP box is connected to linux Box via ethernet
i think a basic problem is the lan connection between the 2. Eth0 wont initialize on the linux box and XP swears the cable is not plugged in.

Any help would be greatly apprieciated.

From the symptoms you described I can almost guarentee that you're using a straight through cable instead of a cross over cable to network your two computers.

Take the cable out of the computers and look at each end of the cable. Look at the wires inside of the plastic case. Are the colours in the same pace on each plug? If they are that is your problem. Go to your nearest computer store and tell them you want a "cross over cable". This will allow you to just throw the cable between your computers and have them walk and talk just fine.

If you're still confused please feel free to post back and I'll see if I can simplify it some more for you.

Cheers
