Would a router be helpful

Hi all.
I am very new to Linux (35 minutes in fact) and have come to realise that at the moment it is not possible to connect to the Internet with a BT Voyager 100 modem, I read somewhere (not here) that a router or Ethernet card would work. I have no clue about any of these so any info would be great.

I am dual-booting my laptop with Windows XP and Mandrake 9.2
HD is 20Gb
RAM 780mb
1066mhz P-3

Thanks again.

Could you explain your situation a bit more clearly? I'm not sure what you are asking.
