Wont connect

im bit of a noob so take it easy. My modem, it works on XP through my ethernet port but doesnt on my USB port, i switch to Mandrake 10.1....it doesnt seem to want to work in either of my ports full stop. It says that eth0 is up, but when i go to connect it says "Connecting to Internet....." gets up to 20 seconds and then says checkin configuration with mandrake control centre then says "not connected". My modem is just simply a cable modem, for 1 computer.

Using the modems ethernet port is the easiest method to connect in linux. Try using the MDK control center again and connect using cable modem.

Failing that we will fall back to the manual method.

I take it this is a dual boot PC?

Forgot to add this but i dont think its important but i use to have a different modem on mandrake and ive recently changed, it was a differnt type and it use to be able to connect through USB. Doubt this info is important.
