Try (as user root):

ifconfig wlan0 up

before iwconfig command and see what happens.

Hi soumalya,

what distro are you using?
You try to configure the wifi manually, but are you sure that you don't have another distro daemon that try to use the wifi at the same time?

Hi soumalya,

I don't know your CentOS configuration, but but are you sure that you don't have a CentOS daemon that try to use the wifi at the same time?
