Wiring home for network

I'm seeing many different types of ethernet cabling and I'm looking for some direction as to what to buy.

Can anyone give some run down on the different types and advantages and disadvantages?

It all depends on the speed you need. Is this going to be used just for internet access or are you expecting to be transferring data between computers?

My personal choice when cabling my house a couple years ago was CAT6. But that might be an overkill.

Do you have a gigabit switch?
Do you plan to stream HD content throughout your home?

There are many different questions that you might want to ask yourself.

Generally, you should separate your ethernet cable away from 120v electrical cable that wires to your light switches and electrical outlet. There high-voltage lines can interfere with low voltage cables such as Ethernet or HDMI.

Yeah, I'd definitely go with Cat6 ethernet with RJ45 terminations. That will give you Gig speed. If you don't have Gig equipment now, you'll have the cable ready when/if you do upgrade your equipment.

Cat6 is not that expensive for a 1000ft roll, which would likely cover your entire house.

I think gigabit is the way to go for sure then. What about the differences in the type of cat6 cable that is available - I see different labeling from different manufacturers are there some to stay away from?
