wireless network times out - will not restart without reboot

First a little background:

I had been manually starting my wireless network with "sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid "my wireless router id". The network would start and work flawlessly for weeks at a time.

I can't ask my wife to find the essid in the terminal and then start wireless manually when I'm not here. She hates and fears the terminal.

So I downloaded gnome network manager for a point and click interface on gnome panel. The network would start fine but shut down after anywhere from one to six hours. It would then refuse to restart manually or otherwise.

I completely uninstalled network manager and tried wicd instead. The same basic problem is happening.

The network will restart if I reboot the computer.

My system:

Desktop computer acting as proxy server for the internet. Internet connection is by a dial up modem.

This computer uses a wireless pci card connected to a dedicated hub. This is for file sharing via nfs. The OS is ubuntu 9.10.

My wife's computer sharing the internet using a proxy to my computer.
File sharing via nfs and a wireless card.
Also running ubuntu 9.10.

This same basic system worked flawlessly under Ubuntu Hardy.

My desktop was updated recently with new hardware which created the need to move to Ubuntu Karmic. Some hardware was too new for hardy to deal with.

Thanks for any and all help.

Do you have any related log output for this issue? /var/log/messages,.. dmesg output,.. lsusb, lspci, lsmod

Have you tried running network manager from gdb or strace to see what is happening behind the scenes?

network still broken

I briefly thought the problem had resolved itself but sadly no.

I've attached a long excerpt from daemon.log and outputs from route, iwconfig, ifconfig and iwconfig scan.

If someone could please help me understand and repair this mess I would truely be grateful.

I've also included a screenshot of wicd just to prove to myself and anyone reading this that the network actually does work on reboot.

These attachments reflect a properly working network. I will try to update with the same basic information when the network next breaks.

Thanks again for any help.

Does she bring the computer to various places or does she use it only at home?

If she only uses it at home you could create a script to manually configure the network. Make the script executable and place in somewhere in PATH. Then create an application launcher on the desktop. The command in the application launcher would be
Quote:

gnome-terminal -e scriptname

icons on toolbar only

I already created such a script. I also created a launcher on the gnome toolbar. Unfortunately the script and launcher give no feedback to the user such as - Am I connected or not?

Also the gnome network manager seems to have changed something somewhere on my system permanently such that after uninstalling gnome network manager I still have a screwed up network.

I'm guessing that configuration scripts were altered during installation and not changed back after removal.

Many thanks for helping.

Another thread has some information about launching gnome-terminal from an application launcher on the desktop that may help you.

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...output-842758/

This will keep the terminal open after the script finishes executing.

Alternatively you could put a read command at the end of the script.

The script can be as interactive as you want to make it.

solved

I think this problem is finally solved. See the last post in the following thread for details.
