Wired network disconnect from Orange Livebox when download speeds are fast
 

Fresh install of Ubuntu 8.10, although this problem occurs on other debian distros.

Example: When running system update, the internet/network connection is lost and a reboot must occur to re-connect. Cannot connect to internet or router (192.168.1.1)

Wireless connection to WinXP laptop is not affected.

Realtek 8111/8168B Onboard Lan adapter.

Is there a way to determine if the router is to blame or the LAN adapter?

Router is an ASDL Modem/Router from France Telecom (Orange Livebox)

Why do you have to reboot?
Can't you reconnect? why not?

Determined it is a problem with the modem / router. I hooked it up to a WinXP laptop and the exact same thing happened. Going to exchange it for a new one today.

Since I've got the Realtek RC111 lan adapter and there had been some problems with it on Linux, I first thought maybe it was a driver or hardware conflict issue.

It was confusing because wireless still worked once it disconnected from my linux box. I could not reconnect and when I pinged the router, I didn't get any response.

It seems like it is a problem with the ethernet ports on the router. When transfer speeds got high, they shut off.

Rebooting must have reset the ethernet port or something, allowing me to connect.

I don't know enough about networking and even less about the internals of a router, so I was stumped trying to put all the pieces together and figure out what was going on. Once I hooked it up to the laptop, I realized it must be hardware in the router. That was the first thing I should have done.

I'll report back if it turns out to be something other than the router.
