Windows virtual machine can't join domain using bridging on Linux host (RPC failed)

When I run my VMware virtual machine (whose guest operating system is Windows) with bridged networking on a Linux host, I can't join the virtual machine to the domain. Why?

I can join the domain if the VM is configured to use Network Address Translation (NAT) instead of bridged networking. When I'm on a Windows host, I can join regardless of whether I'm using bridging or NAT.

If the VM is already on the domain, then I still can't log into it using domain credentials if I'm using bridging and I'm on a Linux host.

'The remote procedure call failed' is the error I get when failing to join. It pops up in a dialog box.

The NetSetup.LOG from the guest that failed to join shows several instances of error code 0x6be ('The remote procedure call failed.'), as well as one instance of 0x534 ('No mapping between account names and security IDs was done.').

Snort logging indicates that packets are travelling successfully between the guest and the domain controllers.

I posted this question on a VMware forum and got no responses.

I'm using VMware Player v1.0.3 build-34682.

Guest OS: Windows XP (I've also tried Windows 2000, same result)

Host OS (Linux): I've tried Knoppix 5.0.1 and Debian 4.0r0

Host OS (Windows): Windows XP

Domain controllers: Windows 2000 running Active Directory
