Windows Server Replacement - Ubuntu

Hello everyone. I am now looking into replacing one of our servers as well as dropping in a new one.

The new server will be a test on a beige box tower for running Joomla CMS for our intranet and some other bits and pieces.

but the big thing that we want to change is our Print, Symantec Anti Virus, and Proxy server.

I am looking to use Ubuntu for the Joomla server (desktop version) and just installing things like PHP5 and mysql, I can handle that.

My real questsion come down to the Print/AV/Proxy server.

What anti virus solutions are there for linux that can scan all in and outbound traffic, and can Ubuntu desktop do the whole proxy thing? or should I look at server. Printing is printing :D

So antivirus and internet access control. Can ubuntu do it? Server or Desktop?

P.S. since my stupid contractors signed me up for Symantec AV till 2009 I may as well leave the client on my users machine and just let it update itself.

Hi there;

Well, I believe that whatever I do with Slackware, you can do with Ubuntu... :)
For Internet access control I can only recomend Squid - What else?... As for anti-virus, you can take a look at ClamAV. Althoug ClamAV can be used in a client-server manner, your best bet might be to use it for the server side only and use the contracted product on the desktop machines.

also, if you want the clients of this server to be able to send/receive mail (smtp/pop3) you'll have to consider NAT (Network Address Translation) because squid is only an HTTP proxy, to start, you can install the firestarter firewall, which is a GUI for iptables, there you can tell firestarter which clients have access to what, then, based on the configuration by firestarter, you can di an initial script for the corresponding runlevel and time it with cron (is a very popular scheduler)

greets!
