WIndows RSH

I used Windows RSH to access MySQL on Linux. The error message is connection cannot be established. Is there any permission that need to be set?

RSH is highly unsafe - and most Linux distributions do not accept rsh traffic by default. First, make sure you have the rsh support installed.

If you don't - don't go get it. Use ssh instead. TeraTerm (free) has an ssh plugin called ttssh (also free). Most Linux distributions do have ssh support by default.

If the rsh stuff is actually present on your linux box, make sure that your "hosts.allow" and "hosts.deny" files are correct (both are found in /etc). Also - make sure that the "rsh <host> -l <username>" is the form used.

Thanks.

Where can I find more info abt rsh? I've installed it but I still cannot connect to host. I got no choice but to use rsh because I'm inheriting a program from another person using that. We are using it internally

The server side of rsh is the rshd - is it enabled = find it in /etc/services and in /etc/inetd.conf?

If you don't have /etc/inetd.conf - check /etc/xinetd.conf (and any includedir directories it may be searching. Is rshd there?

Check your firewall - ipchains or iptables - is port 514 specifically enabled?

Check the man page for rshd as well :
http://www.mcsr.olemiss.edu/cgi-bin/man-cgi?rshd+1

Good luck,
Gary Allen
