There was nothing changed in the smb.conf file but I included it here. As you will see, there is nothing here. The name PIOSOHP is my workgroup name.

; hosts allow = 192.168.1. 192.168.2. 127.

# if you want to automatically load your printer list rather
# than setting them up individually then you'll need this
printcap name = /etc/printcap
load printers = yes

# It should not be necessary to spell out the print system type unless
# yours is non-standard. Currently supported print systems include:
# bsd, sysv, plp, lprng, aix, hpux, qnx
printing = lprng

# Uncomment this if you want a guest account, you must add this to /etc/passwd
# otherwise the user "nobody" is used
; guest account = pcguest

# this tells Samba to use a separate log file for each machine
# that connects
log file = /var/log/samba/%m.log

# Put a capping on the size of the log files (in Kb).
max log size = 0

"smb.conf" 303L, 10999C 39,0-1 9%

if you have samba up and running, provided it is a more recent version use

nmblookup NETBIOS_Name_of_2000 box

if the linux box returns a valid ip then the machine should be accessable. If this is the case check that the case is correct on the share...the shares are case sensitive. try some thing like

smbclient -L \\name_of_2000_box

or because 2000 is a prodigy of NT you may try logging in as administrator

smbclient -L \\2000box -Uadministrator%password

hope this stuff helps I was having the same problem and after reading one of the threads here I came across this info and it rectified my problem

Is this the entire smb.conf file? There seems to be quite a bit missing.

I will post a sample file later. You can back up your file and then try to see if the sample will work.

Hi Jamrock,

No, that is not the entire file. It was truncated on here because it was too large. Give me your email address and I'll sent it to you. Thanks.

Backup your smb.conf file and try this one. Use the same workgroup as the one used on your Windows machine.

[global]

workgroup = myworkgroup
netbios name = linux1

hosts allow = 192.168.123. 127.

log file = /var/log/samba/%m.log

max log size=0

security = user

encrypt passwords = yes
smbpasswd = /etc/samba/smbpasswd

[homes]

comment = Homes directory
browseable = no
writable = yes

[myshare]

path = /home/myshare
public = no
writable=yes
printable=no
create mask = 0765

Two more points.

Make sure that the hosts allow uses the subnet that your machines are on.

Make sure that the firewall on your Linux box is disabled or the network card is a trusted device.
