Windows 2003 Server and Linux 2.6 don't co-exist

Hi all! I have a Linux from scratch 2.6.8 server on a network with several workstations/users and networked printers. All are working great at fast printing and access speeds, until I power up the Windows 2003 server onto the network, then all the linux networking activities, slow to a crawl. I removed all references to the 2003 server from the linux /etc/hosts, but it hasn't helped. Any ideas?

Windows boxes throws around more broadcast traffic. I don't know how your network is designed, but if you can benchmark usage and not use say " I think its slower", then maybe you have a chatty NIC or unwanted broadcast traffic coming from the Windows box. Windows could use WINS, NetBIOS, browser elections(WINS related), and a few more.

Any statistics or is this just 'I believe' type stuff.

The 2003 Server was working great with 2.4 kernel. This has all started since upgrading to 2.6 kernel.

From what I read, your linux box with a 2.6 runs fine until the 2003 box gets plugged in. I'd assume this means that your happy with the linux performance on the 2.6 kernel. The only issue is when you introduce windows onto the wire. As I've stated, without real stats or results, the only thing we can do is guess. Windows does introduce a lot of protocol chatter if not configured correctly. I can't diagnose a problem without some type of data, these are all best guess's at this point.
