winbind on NIS
I am currently using winbind to authenticate NT id's on Linux. I have been having a few problems with winbind, such as mapping home directories and running certain login scripts.
Since I feel like winbind has a few problems, I was thinking of an alternative method to do this authentication. We currently have an NIS infrastructure in place for Unix, which has none of the above problems. I was thinking of installing the winbind on just the NIS authentication servers, and then when people want to login using NT id's, they will be routed to the NIS servers who will authenticate through winbind. All the NIS is using the winbind for is to authenticate. After that, it will do all the other login work itself (ie, home directories, etc).
I don't know much about NIS; what kind of authentication is used? Trap-door (non-reversible) encryption? If so, the ID and passwd that will be sent from the NIS server to the PDC will be unrecognizable and therefore will not work. Any ideas?
