Question win2k - linux ethernet problems

I am having problems networking my win2k box and linux box. as of now, they cannot ping each other. here is the info:

windows machine:
win2k server, 850 mhz, 512ram, everything is running smoothly and i can connect to the internet via modem.
realtek 10/100 nic is set to ip address 192.168.1.11, with subnet 255.255.255.0. no gateway or dns is listed because i don't have them.

linux box:
latest version of peanut linux (ibiblio.org/peanut) on an old P1 133 oc'd to 180mhz, about 40meg ram.
kingston ISA ne compatible nic.

the two machines are linked via a standard 8 port netgear hub and rj45 terminated utp cat5 cables. neither cable is crossover, and neither is plugged into the patch port.

steps i've taken so far:

as stated, i set the win2k nic to the static ip and subnet.

for the linux box, i have run etherset (which i believe is much like the netcfg for redhat) and configured the nic to use ip 192.168.1.22 and subnet 255.255.255.0, again no gateway or dns.

if i check ifconfig, it returns the same information and says that eth0 is running. in modules.conf, there is a listing:
alias etho ne
and checking lsmod shows that ne is running.

shouldn't i, at this point, be able to ping one box from another?

here are some things i have yet to check:

i need to run dmesg after boot up and see if there were any error message (and look up what irq the nic is supposed to run on).

i am not sure what the default firewall config is for the install - anyone know how to check this?

something to note: on the hub, the port connect to linux has the 10 light lit up, and the port connect to win2k has 100 lit up, leading me to believe that they are running at different network speeds. odd, considering they should automatically switch. so i forced the win2k card to use 10full and the light on the hub went out, but at 10half the light for 10 came on ( so theoretically both linux and win2k are running 10baseT ) --- but still no luck.

i'm out of ideas. any advice on what to do or check would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance,

alkee

ISA NE NIC CAN'T PING

I am having a very similar problem. I am trying to use an ISA based NE compatable 10-baseT NIC. It wouldn't autodetect on install (acctually I get a module not found error on all my modules in the install tool from floppy boot, but I believe that is another issue). But I successfully loaded the ne.o with the ismode command.

modprobed the NIC at irq=5 IO=0x300
ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.10 netmask 255.255.255.0
and tried pinging before and after a route add default gw 192.168.1.1 dev eth0

I did an ifconfig and verified that the IP address and subnet took.

I ran dmesg and got a page of
Eth0: TX timed out, lost interupt? TSR:0x3, ISR:0x3, t=1000

I have a Linsys Cable/DSL router 4 port Fast Ethernet. Everything is plugged directly into it.

I can ping my localhost and IP 192.168.1.10 from the Debian machine.

When I try to ping the Debian machine from my W2K machine I get a timeout. Everything else about the W2K machine works.

When I try to ping my W2K machine (192.168.1.3) from my Debian machine it just hanges and shows nothing until I hit Ctrl-C and then it tells me how many packets it dropped.

Others on this board have fixed the problem by going to a PCI based NIC but I don't have one handy and I'm in Tokyo I don't want to pay $50 dollars for a NIC.

PLEASE HELP!!!

Do you know if the NIC is PNP compatable? I have a switch on mine that says PNP/NE2000. I had it set to NE2000 since that is what i was trying to configure. Anyway, I switched the switch to PNP, found the IO and IRQ and it worked.

This probably won't fix your problem but I thought I'd share anyway.

Now if I can just figure out how to make the card come up at boot time.
