Will an Old Pentium Pro 200 Work?

Hi,
This may sound ludicrus, but I was give an old Pentium pro 200 box that I would like to run my Linux Network on. I don't think it has more than 64 but maybe 128 ram on it.
I have SuSe 8.2, 8.1 personal and RH 8.0.
Would any of these work. Now I am only going to use this in home environment which means I will have at most 3 clients at times running on the netwrok.
My thoughts are to try and setup a authincation server and if I really get going maybe learn how to setup a print server.

I know this is slow technology but what can I say it was FREE.

Thanks,
ikw38:cool:

It should be fine - especially if you don't install/use and X environment.

speed demon

ikw38, that's one of the best things about linux, it'll run on just about anything. For example, I had an old 486/33 with 8 megs of ram (in 8 sticks) with a 640meg hard drive (and no case). I had an uptime of *412 days* (Twas a sad day when my roomate thought it was 'broken' and unplugged it.) It acted as our Cable Modem Router. It was fast as heck and could configure any aspect.... ok ok, </nostalgia>

Yes, Linux would run great on your PPro, in fact, you can optimize your kernel specifically for PPro's if you ever compile the kernel on your own.

I shamelessly promote Slackware where ever necisary, and can't think of a better case to do so. Before you jack with SuSE, or especially Redhat, check out Slackware. But.. sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. I was forced to run Redhat once, though I'll deny it to my death if you leak.

G'luck.

The X

X Windows would run fine, crazy!

It's those KDE and Gnome enthusiasts that disagree. There is life after GTK/QT, and there was once life before it, ooo, aaaa.

I know but there is no point in having X on a router/file server (It is a complete waste of resources) and some people install an X environment just to configure it.

I had a p200 running my webserver and ftp server, also along with samba and NFS as a fileserver. Had only 64 megs of ram.. etc. Never had any problems with it ever.

Thanks to all- i will probably try it with the x e windows simply bacause I don't know command line very well yet.
Good here from you tricky kid, I hope life has been well.

Let you know how it comes out.

I've got a Pentium 200Mhz running as a NAT box/wireless router/web/mail/DNS server for a couple domains... heck LinuxQuestions here used to run off of a duallie PPro machine. Once you ditch X-windows and all of the GUI pretty goop, things get much simpler.

Cheers,

Finegan
