why doesn't my ssh work?


I am a newer in linux,i used "ssh" to login a remote system,I entered the correct password ,but it
can't connect successfully.My system kernel is 2.4.21,and the remote system kernel is 2.6.12,does that matter?
Can someone help me?

No, not at all. The best thing to do is to run ssh in 'verbose' mode -- the problem should become pretty clear. Note that if there is a firewall between the two systems, it will of course need to have been set to allow such access.

I've had a similar problem on Gentoo, involving Privilege separation and PAM authentication.
The problem is that once ssh has dropped the privileges, PAM auth does not work.

Open up the /etc/ssh/sshd_config file, and change the line which reads "UsePAM yes" to "UsePAM no".
You might also want to check that PasswordAuthentication is set to yes.
