Why does 'route' command delay before output default gw?

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
I have been using route for some time. Every time i type route on any machine (for the first time in a session usually), it outputs some strings, and then some delay takes place (about 10 seconds). Why is the delay present?

Right, the -n option turns off name lookups (which is likely causing the delay you're seeing).

I've found 'ip route show' to give an immediate response, too.
