Why do I have so many Samba process running

I am running Suse 9.2 with samba...

samba-client-3.0.9-2.1
yast2-samba-client-2.10.5-2
yast2-samba-server-2.10.7-3
samba-vscan-0.3.5-10.3
samba-doc-3.0.9-2.1
samba-3.0.9-2.1

Over the past couple of months I have a problem where I will get 1,400 to 1,600 smd procceses running on my box. The number keeps growing slowly every few minutes. The only way to stop this is to /etc/init.d/smb stop and restart.

I am new to linux and would like to know why this is happening and what I can do to fix it

Thanks in advance for the help
