Why can I connect if I enter the IP into the browser but not if I use the domain name

Hey All

I'm really new to this and I am trying to connect to the internet.

I am using RH 9 on a computer that has a dual boot with XP. The computer connects to the internet through a server. The IP address settings are the same in Linux as they are in XP. The XP side connects but the Linux does not.

I've tried some of the advice on the forum. The most interesting result thus far is that if I type 216.239.39.99 into my browser's URL, I can get to google. However, it does not work if I try typing google's domain name.

I realise that my problem is the DNS information, but I do not know how to fix it.

Any help would really be appreciated

Boot to windows ..

start -> run -> cmd

ipconfig /all

write down the DNS server ip's

boot to Linux

edit /etc/resolv.conf

add a line like this

nameserver 10.0.0.1

where 10.0.0.1 is the name sever you wrote down from before.
you can have many lines like above.

nameserver 10.0.0.1
nameserver 10.0.0.2
