Hi all,

Could someone kindly help? I scanned my linux box, which is a RH 7 distro, and saw that a whole bunch of UDP ports open. Every other fourth UDP port was open starting from port number 1 or something. Does anyone know what this means? It doesn't make sense that all of those ports are open. I set my scanner to scan a few thousand UDP ports but couldn't wait for it to finish because it was returning so many opened. Where would I find the services that are keeping those ports open? It doesn't make sense that that many services are running.

Appreciate any help you might give.
TIA.

check here first:

Check /etc/services for listings of ports being used by services.

what port scanner are you using? I think 'nmap' will actually tell you what service is listening on the port.
