which is better? dhclient dhcpcd or pump?
I refer to this link
http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/DHCP ...when looking at the individual links I am unable to tell which is better,
assuming they will still be recognised as a DHCP protocol
feel free to express your opinion and any links will be greatly appreciated.
(2) for those interested my broadband ISP allows PPPoE and I am using a router. but I am a newbie to this technology having spent years on dial up.
care to expand on "better" ? what do you require from your dhcp client? if you have no special requirements then there is little difference between them.
How about which one works best with:
Tmobile Wireless Networks( think Starbucks )
Compatible with largest variety of DHCP server implementations
User Friendly(configuration, interface, set it and forget it )
I feel a little sheepish as I have come from dial up.
I have yet to troubleshoot all my issues but they appear to relate to the change from localhost to some kink of dhcp.
b4 eth0 router connected I had outputs of (with su powers)
I then made a new host
then changed firwall to LAN (eth0)
and created a Lan connection
and it works as I am on the net now.
but whatever I have missed has created big delays getting to xdm. No changes were made to xorg.conf so my fumbling brain is thinking its related to DNS and eth0 and its related configs.
Yes I do not know what I am doing. heh heh
(2) another puzzle for me is that Mandriva has an icon for connect to LAN = eth0 or disconnect
when its disconnected and with no other changes my firefox starts within 2 seconds.
when connected it takes 10 seconds.
sorry for the long reply and when I figure it out I will post my findings.
syslog had some kdm errors that were there even on rebuild but on rebuild I went for autologin and that worked fine....and xdm then did not hang on re-config.
Have not had a chance to download the latest video drivers yet.
2) I have played with my router settings soooo much that I think my firefox hanging was a router config issue.
3) in testing at pcflank.com it detected my poor config of the router to allow ports 21 23 80 etc to ALL but altho I have wised up on that matter I am still getting some closed ports reports that a number of firewalls I have attempted to config won't play at pcflank.
for those interested I found guarddog the easiest to config for LAN and I allowed only DNS http and httpps but still getting some non-stealthed ports.
They are still closed so I am signing off this thread unless someone spots what I have missed.
could not get pump to work with my PPPoE ISP and have not tested the others as I have other things to sort out.
if you were not asking me forgive me
