Question What is Linux's version of Active Directory?

Hello everyone.

Well, the company I work for wants to roll out a new User management system and they want to go with a Linux based system. It is a smaller company, with around 80 employees.

I am trying to do some research to find out exactly what I need, but from what I have gathered so far, it will be something simliar along the longs of Microsofts Active Directory feature.

What is the equivalent in Linux? LDAP?

I am compiling a list of all the features the CEO would like to have with this new user management. I will post when I have more.

In the meantime, does anyone have any experience with setting up a network like this? If so, can you give me your input, thoughts and experiences?

Thanks.

iplanet directory server (LDAP) and samba 2.2.7 or greater will give you domain logons like MSAD with out the kerberos ticket exchange.

I run a network like you are describing, using iplanet and samba, it does take some work and their are some features missing from this setup that MSAD would provide. but overall it works very well and I have no complaints.

I appreciate your input. At the moment, I have setup a Samba server as our backup server. I have attached a 5 tape HP autoloader to the samba server to backup our data. Took some work, but I finally got it up and running.

Now, they want to implement a different user management. It sounds like LDAP is the way to go. I will definetly need to do my research.

Thanks again.

If you have any tips, I wouldn't mind that either.
