well nmbd is part of samba, don't know why inetd is trying to load it.. maybe samba used to be a inetd thing... and maybe i'm showing myself up, but i'm pretty sure that execv is a spelling mistake.. yours or the config files?
nmbd is a part of samba? Well that explains why it can't find the file and/or directory--samba hasn't been installed on my system yet. :-)
"execv" is not a typo BTW--that's exactly how the message is appearing in the syslog.
If "execv" is a spelling mistake, I expect it was introduced by the distribution. The only changes I've made to networking-related configs, was to add a few lines to rc.inet2 to fire up the DHCP server daemon, and uncomment the section which starts up BIND.
nmbd- NetBIOS name server to provide NetBIOS over IP naming services to clients
It's used by Samba along with smbd, but I'm not sure what else it might be associated with.
If it's being started from inetd, there will be some reference to it in /etc/inetd.conf. Try commenting out the line and see if anything complains. It can also be started from a file in /etc/rc.local; you might want to look there also.
BTW- there's actually a man page for the execv function.
Not that I have much programming experience, but after reading the execv man page (this in paticular: "The initial argument for these functions is the pathname of a file which is to be executed.") I got the impression that the error in dguy's syslog was the result of an execv call in which /usr/sbin/nmbd was the first agrument. Not finding the file, it barfed an error to the logs.
It was just a really uninformed guess; If I'm wrong, it would be interesting to know the right answer.
