What do I need to run fiber from my switch to my Linux box?

What do I need to run fiber from my switch to my Linux box?

I have a cable modem, going to a router, going to my switch, which has an SFP port on my switch.

Can someone post and idiots guide to fiber? For example, where do I get the cable from? Does i need to put something in the SFP port on the switch? Which fiber based nic cards work good with Linux?

TIA!

You need a media convertor that goes into the SFP slot.
Something like a Netgear AGM731F... buy them anywhere.

Cables you can get from Blackbox.com or anywhere.

Network cards, maybe you can find one.

That's alot of money to spend when a $5 copper network cable and a $15 NIC will do the same thing....

Something to begin with ....... Google provides some info.

Google, "keyword" .. router to nic fiber ..

https://www.thefind.com/instruments/...r-optic-cables
....

And Google .. why fiber cable ..
http://www.lanshack.com/fiber-optic-tutorial-cable.aspx
....

Also consider : For a short distance fiber is
no better than copper wiring.

....
