Want to set up a home network
 

I'm a complete n00b when it comes to networking and need some help on deciding what equipment I need and how to set it up. I've got two computers I want to network: a Windows XP machine in the basement of my house and a dual-boot Windows XP/RedHat Enterprise 3 on the second floor of my house. My main intent with this network would be too share the cable modem in the basement with the other one. From what I've read online I think I need some sort of broadband router in the basement and ethernet cards in both computers, which probably would mean running some new cables through the house, or to go wireless.

What would be best for my situation, wired or wireless, and what equipment would I need to get it working with Red Hat?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

to answer your question on which solution would be better....
- If you don't mind purchasing and running some ethernet cable through your house (which I personally recommend for security reasons) then I would say that this is the better option.
- If you prefer not to figure out how to run cabling and would prefer not to use the above option, then go wireless.

In either case you will need a router. Linksys is pretty well known for being a decent product, but basically if you go to your local computer store they can recommend a router for you. Should be between $50 and $80.

In addition to a router you will need Network Interface Cards (NICs). Depending on whether you go wireless or not, you will need wireless or normal ethernet cards. If your computers have been purchased within the last 4 years, it is most probable that they came with network cards installed. If they didn't a normal NIC cost about $10-15 and a wireless.... probably 20 or 30 (i don't really know, just a good guess). once you've got all the equipment you're ready to read all the documentation and learn some good networking concepts. :)

Oh, and as far as network cards, you'll need one per computer, and judging from the fact that you have a cable modem, your computer in the basement most likely already has one.

Actually, it's connected via USB, but I think the one upstairs has one already, but I'm not sure if Red Hat reads it.
