waiting for the PPP interface

hi!... i have a weird problem, i was surfing the web just fine (for hours) and just like that i couldn't surf any more. now i can't connect to my ISP.
i'm using Dial Up, KPPP, external modem (serial), Slackware 9.1, Linux 2.6.3.

the modem works just fine (as i am using it right now, under windows). this is the error i'm getting:

May 16 18:48:01 plugged pppd[774]: Cannot determine ethernet address for proxy ARP

the weird thing is that yesterday i was surfing just fine and the next time i want to connect it said something like this:

May 15 13:48:01 plugged pppd["can't remember error code"]: Something about not having access to /etc/ppp/options file


Unable to provide help.

after getting this message i said, "OK, it's just a permission", so i chmod 755 /etc/ppp/options and nothing happened.

i don't know what else to do... thanks

have u tried running pppconfig as root to configure ppp?
try pon to start the connection
ifconfig -a or showstat to see if the modem is connected poff to disconnect
what are the outputs of lspci and lsmod?
