vsFTPD login problem

I'm trying to configure vsFTPD. I want it to allow only users in the /etc/vsftpd.user_list file. That is working to some extent. But when I try to login as any of the users (they're all local users and i'm trying to use their passwords for the computer) it says

[root@localhost root]# ftp localhost
Connected to localhost (127.0.0.1).
220 (vsFTPd 1.1.3)
Name (localhost:root): root
331 Please specify the password.
Password:
530 Login incorrect.
Login failed.

how do i set the passwords for the users?

Does it work with another user other than root?

It isn't really a good idea to ftp as root from a security point of view.

Can you post vsftpd.conf

What distro are you using?

I'm using RH9, I'll post the vsftpd.conf file later for you. I'm at a different computer at the moment so it would be sorta difficult.

yes. vsftpd does not allow you to ftp as root. "Good software programmers, good boys. Now have a cookie."
