vpn pptp with existing ppp adsl setup

Hi all,

I'm going to try to setup my homeserver (Fedora Core 3) as a VPN server using pptp because it seems that pptp will make it easier to connect from Windows clients (I'm not too concerned about the poorer security).

In particular there are three things I'm trying to achieve:
-Encrypted HTTP (and etc.) traffic
-Accessing of Samba shares while on the road
-LAN GAMES! (Connection of remote clients to machines on the local lan)

However, I'm lead to believe that most pptp implementations use the ppp daemon. This could be a problem because I already use pppd to connect to the net via my ADSL link like this:

pppd call speedtch

I believe it is PPPoE if this helps.

For an example of my problem, most tutorials will require you to place something in /etc/ppp/chap-secrets. However I already have my ISPs username and password in this file and I really don't want to mess anything up.

Can anyone tell me what files I should be staying away from edditing and what files are safe to edit? In particular are there any good tutorials I could follow or pptp implementations I should be looking in to?

(NATting isn't a problem -- the server is also a router, and thus has an external IP and an internal IP. It's not running as a DNS server (will it need to be?) but is assigned a dynamic dns from dyndns.com. Finally, will I be able to test out the connection by connecting from within the LAN?)

Cheers,

Daniel

PoPToP is the pptp vpn server for linux.

It should be available as a package in FC3 however it requires a recent ppp version that can do the mppe encryption.

There is no problem with several pppd daemons running at once. They select the next interface number. Your dsl should grab ppp0 by default, so pptpd will start pppd with ppp1.

I want to note that I was running a PPTP VPN for a while, I was able to get filesharing, etc... setup but was unable to get LAN games to work, for some reason the internal computers, could not see games on the VPN computers and vice versa. Also DNS is only needed if you don't have a static IP on you LAN computers which you can remember.
