vpn & vnc

Hi there,

I am a newbie at both Linux and networking so any hand-holding would be really appreciated! :-)

Anyway, I've installed Mandrake 8.2 at home and it's working great. I'm dual booting with Win2k.

When I'm at home, I have been using vpn to log in to our network at work, and then using pc anywhere to check my work email with MS Outlook and to work on files etc. I have found the vnc website and got it to work on my Win2k side (i.e. replacing pcanywhere, basically). I still have to connect using vpn, but I can then use vnc.

I'd like to duplicate this on my Linux side (so I can take one more step to getting rid of Win2k!!). It looks like there is a linux version of the vnc client. My question is: how can I create the vpn connection to my office's network in order to use vnc? I found a program called vpnd and checked out their website at: http://sunsite.dk/vpnd/.

It looks like (based on the FAQ at the vpnd website) that it won't connect with a MS vpn server. Is this true? If so, are there any alternatives? I'd really like to migrate to linux 100% at home but I need to be able to access my work desktop and check email....

Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance!

You could use the FreeS/WAN software. It works pretty good if your VPN server supports IPSEC.

I think you can also connect to your win2k box at work using your browser. After you're connected via your VPN just browse to your workstation on port 5800. It should open on inside your Netscape or Mozilla window on your Linux box.
