VNC from XP to Linux

Hello All, I'm trying to VNC into my Linux box from a XP Pro client using TightVNC, whilst I get connected ok I'm presented with a grey screen with two check boxes in the top left hand corner, one says "Send clipboard to viewers" the other "Send primary selection to viewers", where is my Linux desktop ?, if I connect to a windows XP server all is well ( Well !!! ) , any ideas ( The Linux box is running Fedora Core 2 )

regards

did you read the documentation for vncserver? if you did you'd know you need to load a window manager via ~/.vnc/xstartup. this will not export your main X display, but create another new one. if you want to see your current one via vnc you'd need to install the libvnc package to install as a module inside xorg / XFree86, basically a totally different server method.

You're VNCing correctly and you're connecting to the X server. Your problem is that the window manager is not displaying (probably either Gnome or KDE, whichever you use).

Go into the home directory of the user who is running the "vncserver" program (I hope you're not using root). Go into the ".vnc" directory and there should be a startup file "xstartup".

You want to put something like:

Code:
startkde
if you use KDE. Then you have to restart your vnc server. The xstartup file is the file read when the new X session (or screen) starts up.

I don't remember if you have to add an ampersand on the end of that or not (it's been a few months since I've set one up). For example

Code:
startkde &
I'm not able to test that out. But it should work for you. Remember to RESTART YOUR VNC SERVER before trying again.

PS.
BTW, here's a clip from the windowsXP EULA (C:\Windows\System32\EULA.txt):

Quote:
Except as otherwise permitted by the NetMeeting, Remote Assistance, and Remote Desktop features described below, you may not use the Product to permit any Device to use, access, display or run other executable software residing on the Workstation Computer, nor may you permit any Device to use, access, display, or run the Product or Product's user interface, unless the Device has a separate license for the Product.
I think that technically means that you can't use any thirdparty VNC connection to connect to your winXP box. Correct me if I'm wrong, anybody. It's in the first indented block of the EULA.

If you want the same functionality is the Windows vnc server, check out x11vnc. A google should point you in the right direction.
