Virtual Network Interfaces - What is it suitable for?

Hiho!

What are Virtual Network Interfaces (e.g. eth0:1) suitable for? I mean a reasonable range of application?

Further how are switches deal with the fact, that 2 network devices are using the same MAC address? Doesn't it cause problems with the CAM-table?

Regards
OK

Hi

I think this is mostly used for ip based virtual webservers (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_hosting#IP-based)

hm... Why should this case a problem with the CAM table?
cheers

Arg, yes. The CAM-table only holds one MAC address and doens't care about multiple IP's behind this one. My mistake.
