Verizon dsl setup issues w/ RH9/Fedora
 

This problem has been bugging me for a couple of weeks now. I've got a dual boot set up on my machine with Windows XP and Fedora Core 1. I installed Fedora about a week ago, but I was having the same problems in RH9. I have a small grasp on what's going on because I am taking a Linux and networking (that focuses more on W2K server). By no means however, do I really know what I'm doing. :)

When I had DSL from Earthlink, I had no problems whatsoever. I set it up in
the Internet config wizard, ran redhat-config-network let me activate it as
a logical device. Verizon didn't want to make it that easy. I got my DNS
numbers from XP and put that into /etc/resolv.conf. The gateway address I
put into incfg-eth0. When I ran service network restart, I got these two errors:
fgrep: ifcfg: no such file or directory
Bringing up interface ppp0: ./ifup configuration for ppp0 not found.

I ran ifup ppp0 and got /sbin/ifup: configuration for pppoe not found. I looked at the file, but I don't really understand the script. I was then able to
activate the Verizon connection in the Network Device Control, but it wasn't able to connect to any website in Mozilla. I reset the modem, and ran ifconfig and everything seemed to be right, so I ran the one command and got that error about /sbin/ifup.

ifup eth0 already is working because it brings up the NIC at boot up. The
other thing I had left in my limited knowledge was to get Roaring Penguin.
I am not sure, but rp-pppoe-3.5-1.src.rpm seemed like the right one to
download. This is what I did with it and the errors I got:

rpm -i rp-pppoe...
error: rp-pppoe.... : V3 DSA signature: BAD, key ID 34ab95ba
error: rp-pppoe.... cannot be installed.

I have no idea what that means. I thought that you could double-click
an .rpm like an executable, but a couple of times it worked for me. Mostly, it did absolutely nothing.

Like I said, I really have no idea what the problem is, but I suprised I figured out as much as I did. At least, I learned some stuff that will be useful in my future endeavours.
