Various newbie networking problems.


Hi all,

Sorry for the newbie questions...

I have Mandrake 9.1 (upgraded to 9.2) installed on one of my PCs. I've installed it with the "Higher" level security, and set Shorewall to allow Web/FTP in the setup process. I have proftpd running as my FTP server.

I have 3 users setup on the box, one is myself, and 2 guests. I can log in fine as myself into the FTP server, but get "access denied" if I try to log in as the other 2 users. They are both members of the "ftp" group, though.
Also, I cannot ping the box on my network, but the network is working fine as I log in as myself to FTP, and I can also access The Internet using Linux (through my router).

I have tried disabling shorewall by going to "/etc/init.d" and running "./shorewall stop", but I still get the same problem. I'm also having problems setting up Samba shares on the Linux box, but I think that these problems are all connected somehow. I'm using static IPs on my LAN, by the way.

Any help anyone can give me will be greatly appreciated.

Try resetting your security level to "High". Security level is set in mdk with a program called "msec" which is totally separate from iptables for which shorewall is a front end. Here's a link describing how it works:

It's a little dated and the names of the security levels have changed, but you can get some idea about what msec is doing and how to customize it. In my experience, anything greater than "High" causes all kinds of usability problems. You can reset the security settings in mandrake control center>Security.

Hi,

Thanks, that seemed to let my users log in! I still can't ping the xbox, though. It's not my Win2K PC, as that can ping anything else on my LAN. It's not a big deal, but I would like to be able to ping it. I'm now having /home problems with FTP, but I'll post that under a new thread.

I'm going to try Samba soon, thanks for your help!
