/usr/bin/rhgb-client -- error while loading shared libraries: libpopt.so.0

Hi All,

I have RHEL 5 installed in my system. Something must has happened because when i reboot the server, it came with many error..

/usr/bin/rhgb-client -- error while loading shared libraries: libpopt.so.0. Can't open shared object files. No such file/directory

It finnaly ends with the "init: Id "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes".

From there, if i hit enter, i can't log in..

How Can i fix it without re-installing?

Help Appreciated.

The yum provides command reports that libpopt.so.0 is "A C library for parsing command line parameters". I think I would try interrupting the boot process and edit the grub.conf file to get into runlevel 1. If that works, you can edit /etc/inittab and change the id:5:initdefault line to id:3:initdefault. after a reboot, you should be in runlevel 3. Now you can determine if the library in question is installed by using the rpm -qa | grep libpopt command. If you are missing the lib, you could issue the yum install command:
yum install popt.i386 <-- For a 32 bit library
yum install popt.x86_64 <-- For a 64 bit library

Hope this helps
Terry
