Mail agent use the DNS to resolve the email address.When you use the vpn,the ip has been changed but the DNS maybe not.So,when you read email,if the DNS server cann't be reached through by vpn ,you will see the error:Temporary failure in name esolution.
Use the command "netstat -r " to see your machine routing talbe.Make sure ,your DNS can reach.
I don't understand what you mean by 'ip has been changed'

Here is some more information about my setup that might help:
I have a static ip address with a local network with a NAT router.
I have the static ip address DNS/Reverse DNS to 192.168.0.101, which is the local ip address of this particular computer.
> netstat -r
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS Window irtt Iface
192.168.0.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth1
link-local * 255.255.0.0 U 0 0 0 eth1
loopback * 255.0.0.0 U 0 0 0 lo
default 192.168.0.1 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 eth1
"Change' mean:When the VPN connection is established , you will get an another ip address that help you to visit the remote site .The tunnel will encapsulate all the data to remote site.So,when you read the email as normal , the DNS query data also transmit to remote.If remote site can't respond the request,you will receive the error.
The routing table will help you make sure the DNS query route path.
Of course,there will be some other problems make the email don't work well.
