Post using encryption with iwconfig (wi-fi connection)

I encoutner problems to connect through wi-fi using encryption with command iwconfig: when I'm doing:
iwconfig eth1 key restricted
iwconfig eth1 key XXXX-XXXX-XX
conection is refused. Why that??
I suppose in this case that's WEP which is used by default as protocol of encryption even if it is not clearly mentionned in the documentation (man iwconfig) and normally WEP should be supported by most cards (for me it is a centrino chipset on a laptop) but eventually wpa should be supported too. Is there any unix command to print supported encryption type?

Thank you in advance for any suggestion

You either need to add the key in hex format like this
iwconfig eth1 key XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX

or as dec like this
iwconfig eth1 key XXXXXXXXXX
