Question Use of /etc/idmapd.conf ??

Hi,

I just came across a NFS file /etc/idmapd.conf and its daemon rpc.idmapd.
It helps us to map user and groups with UID and GID.

This is fine, BUT how does this mapping helps us. I mean NFS works fine perfectly without using this file also. What purpose it solves by mapping ?

Please someone throw some light on this. I did some googleing but could not get much into my head.

Thanks and Regards,
VIKAS
