I'm not looking for configuration help... but I'm looking for USB wireless devices that I can plug into any laptop running GNU/Linux and connect to the web. I know that there are some devices that are related to stuff in the kernel (I don't really understand these things).

I've been pointed here (http://linuxwireless.org/) in the past... but I don't really know how to make sense of any of that. Other forums have pointed me to these devices (vaguely):

Can anyone link me to a USB wireless device that works with GNU/Linux (without ndiswrapper, etc...) that I can purchase via the web?

It sounds like you're looking for a USB wireless bridge.

I got a bridge once at a hotel where they offered them to folks who did not have wireless computers.

It seamlessly connected to the ethernet port on my Slackware 10.2 laptop for the duration of the stay.

The issue may be configuring it. It Linux cannot see it to configure it, it may not be as portable as you would like.
