It would help to post model of USB modem and exact errors you get.
Also check the HCL section here at the top and see if your modem is listed there.

Not sure what to do here. Found a link here http://my.opera.com/boxopen/blog/show.dml/55566 that describes building or maybe patching the cdcether and creates a new one called insmod VKGEther. Read through and see if it helps. Seen some post here at LinuxQuestions and one said they had it work off the bat under Fedora Core 1 but when upgrading they ran into an issue. Use the search and check them out. Also google over at http://www.google.com/linux and enter model number to see the links that popup from the search tool.

If it was me I would get an ethernet card in the machine and connect that way. It would have to be a whole lot simplier. One thing that might help but doubt is use alias eth0 instead of eth1 since you have no nics now. Could be so underlying issue there.

If something comes to mind I will post. If you get it post an article in HCL section for others.

What module does the rtl8139 going to use? It may already be present. To check to a ' modprobe module_name '.
