Ok, Windows has ****ed up for the last time. I had dual boot with Linux and Windows. The reason I still use Windows is because I can't go online in Linux. My modem won't dial up. The second reason is becuase I don't know if Diablo II: Expansion will run in Linux or not.

But anyway, Windows is ****ing up again. I used to have Linux installed a long time ago before I messed something up and had to format and reinstall it. The first time I installed it, it dialed up. That version was Mandrake 9.1. It wouldn't dial up ever since.

Now I have JAMD Linux installed, and it queries the modem fine on like port S0 or something, I forget for sure. But anyway, it detects it on a port. It doesn't work on device/modem. Anyway, after I found the port that worked, it says modem ready, and when I try to dial up, it tries to initialize the modem, and it never gets farther. The modem never makes a sound. I was online on Linux before, so I know it can work.

Someone please help me to get online. Please don't leave me with a monopoly's inferior operating system, leaving me with security flaws, viruses, memory corruption, errors, etc. Please help me to get my modem to dial up!

Btw, I don't know what version Linux JAMD is. I am also illiterate at the Unix command line. Just thought you should know.

Do you have access to a newer distro, preferably a livecd, like Simply Mepis or Knoppix, that you can use to test your modem with coz it could be a problem with JAMD, but obviously you may not know unless you test your modem on newer distros which have better hardware detection etc.

I'm not asking you to go elsewhere, I'm trying to point out that making really crappy thread titles that state your problem is "URGENT" can come off to many as being rude and inconsiderate. You have to imagine that members come here to help people like you for free and in their own spare time. To those that make descriptive titles that don't put "URGENT" in all caps but only to wait patiently for an answer, your question should have no priority over anyone else's becuase you put Urgent in your title and that you need help, we already know this, that's why your here asking a question.

Reddazz, I had the same problem with Mandrake 9.1 also. It doesn't make sense though, because the first time I installed Mandrake, it eventually dialed up. I remember downloading a driver for the modem, but I don't remember how to install it. I did it once though.

I went to a message board once, after I installed Linux a second time, since I had the same problem. They gave me syntax to install the driver that didn't work. (I had to use 'dows to go online to do it) Or maybe I'm just a complete hopeless dumbass.

A friend of mine who knew more about Unix than me couldn't even install it. I don't know why I am having the same problem with Mandrake 9.1 and JAMD. It's a data/faxmodem.

Is it a winmodem, and if so, do you have the necessary driver installed? Try googling...often quite helpful if you are descriptive.

You should try to find out the make and model of your modem.

If you continue to have problems, external, hardware modems are now very cheap (saw some for ~$15). They are much more likely to work with linux without the installation of any new driver.

I had installed drivers for a lucent technologies modem on a desktop (Lucent has excellent linux capabilities) and some driver (forgot which one) on a laptop. It's not that hard to install. You just need to go to a place like linmodems.org once you know what model you have, download the appropriate driver, and follow the installation directions (uncompress it and look at the contents of a file called INSTALL or README).
