upload and download Bandwidth speed, in kbps
 

I would like to determine the upload and download speed (in kbps) of an internet connection.

But I have a few constraints:

1. The system is in a remote location.
2. I have only ssh access to it.
3. It cannot run any GDM.

I could add another job to the existing cron tasks.
But how can I get accurate kbps numbers for upload and download?

So I am looking for reliable bandwidth speed testing CLI script(s).
