Upgrade Ipw2200 Drivers

I just installed kubuntu 5.10 on my dell inspiron 8600. Everything works great except my Intel Pro Wireless 2200 card. I had to manually install wpa supplicant in order to connect to my local network. The connection was not stable, it connects for a brief moment and then reconnects, and then disconnects. After some reading I discovered many users with a similar problem. They all suggested that I upgrade my ieee80211 stack and ipw2200 drivers. I did so my downloading the packages from sourforge.net. I installed the ieee80211 network stack followed by the ipw2200 driver. Everything seemed to install smoothly via make, sudo make install. But when I tried sudo modprobe ipw2200 I got the following:

Am I missing a step? I removed the old driver and ieee80211 network stack prior to installing the new ones. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Did you also install the firmware for the card ?

Just a little more you might want to consider. That driver is
in the 2.6.15 kernel, but you still need the firmware:

for information on where to install the firmare images.

That's from the 2.6.15 .config file via xconfig ...

The current firmware for the Intel Pro 2200 comes with Ubuntu 5.10. I didn't remove the firmware, all I did was upgrade the ieee80211 network stack and the ipw2200 driver.

Turns out I have to manually load the driver each time I reboot. Via the source directory and running sudo sh load. Does anyone know of a way to have this automatically load at boot?

1. My English isn't good

2. My solution:
Compile a new kernel (easy with ubuntu/debian

) without any ipw2200 and ieee80211 modules. Some parts of this driver (but older version) was fix installed in the kernel. After reboot, install ipw2200, ieee80211 (remove, make, make install, depmod -a) and new firmware, reboot again. Now the hotplug system detect the new driver and load it automatically.

I hope this solutions works on your system too.
