up2date is ignoring me

Hello,
Lately (the past few days), up2date is giving me an error (here is an entry from the update agent log),
[Tue Apr 22 21:25:43 2003] up2date A socket error occurred: ( (110, 'Connection timed out'), attempt #5
[Tue Apr 22 21:25:43 2003] up2date Error communicating with server. T The message was:Connection timed out.

I can ping locally as well as to the world
Telnet causes a syn_sent to show up on the port
tcp 0 1 xx.xx.xx.xx:34539 xx.xx.xx.xx:443 SYN_SENT

ifconfig results with
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:00:XX:XX:XX:XX
inet addr:XX.XX.XX.XX Bcast:255.255.255.255 Mask:XX.XX.XX.XX

collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
RX bytes:20942931 (19.9 Mb) TX bytes:2971205 (2.8 Mb)
Interrupt:4 Base address:0x9160

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1

TX packets:544 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:32486 (31.7 Kb) TX bytes:32486 (31.7 Kb)

any ideas as to why telnet not working as well as up2date?
