Been using Linux for quite some time on my laptop now, but now I got into ssh-ing to the university unix network computer.
Problem: whenever I then want to use vi or pico or whatever, the network computer complaints that is doesn't know enough about my terminal type (telling me "Unknown terminal type" and something like "linux is not enough"). This is when I ssh from a text terminal.
When I'm in X11, I get similar complaints, pico doesn't work, but vi does:
Code:
unix.utu.fi:~> pico
Sorry, I don't know anything about your "Eterm" terminal.
unix.utu.fi:~> vi
Eterm: Unknown terminal type
Visual needs addressable cursor or upline capability
:q
unix.utu.fi:~>
Where and what should I edit in order to provide this kind of info?
Found the following in /etc/profile:
Code:
# I had problems using 'eval tset' instead of 'TERM=', but you might want to
# try it anyway. I think with the right /etc/termcap it would work great.
# eval `tset -sQ "$TERM"`
if [ "$TERM" = "" -o "$TERM" = "unknown" ]; then
TERM=linux
fi
Any advice appreciated!
Cheers, Leon.
