unknown cPanel server - mail failure (message discarded)
i voluntarily manage my workplace's web server.
it has a cpanel, and mail accounts are supported.
have worked so far.
but yesterday i tried to send a mail to many recipients, and many outdated email addresses (mail gets rejected).
i got quite a few messages a lá
Quote:
A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:
then, the last few messages contained this:
Quote:
This message was created automatically by mail delivery software.
A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its recipients.
This is a permanent error.
The following address(es) failed: xxxxx@yyyyy.com
Domain nnn.tld has exceeded the max defers and failures per hour (10/10 (35%)) allowed.
Message discarded.
i understand what is happening there, but i find it inacceptably harsh to just discard valid messages, because some very low quota on failures has been filled.
so my question, is it possible to do something about it?
i have no idea what is at work behind cpanel.
cpanel itself does not have a lot of customisation options for the email.
Code:
uname -rv
2.6.32-673.8.1.lve1.4.3.el6.x86_64 #1 SMP Wed Feb 10 08:57:30 EST 2016
^ thank you so much.
actually, yeah, i should've done some more research...
it seems i cannot login as root.
i don't know if this is a restriction of the web hosting, or i simply do not know the password.
we will see.
i am half-ready to give up on this:
i don't get paid to do it, i already take care of the website, and the person in charge is so computer-illiterate, it's a giant pain to even try to explain things as simple as a password change every ten years...
anyhow, no amount of online research can give me the root password.
that would require
1. ask my boss, only to receive a blank stare and "don't know"
2. call the provider, ask them what and how, only to get told that only the person that they have on record can request that
3. ask my boss to ask my provider to give me full access
i might do 3. at some point in the future, but for not getting paid it's a lot to ask (mind, nobody's asking me, i took it on voluntarily).
Whomever the WHM account holder is (root 'user' is correct I believe).
Dedicated or Shared Hosting?
dedicated, if that means 1 virtual server for 1 customer (that's us, we are the customer).
i can see a whm login on port 2087, but none of the usual credentials work there. afaiu, WHM is not for us (owner of 1 virtual server). i've ever only used cpanel.
i am quite sure i managed to login as root at some point in the past, be it over ssh or cpanel, but no clue how. hopefully it's just a question of the right password.
