University of Michigan network configuration
 

Hi,

I'm running Libranet Linux v.2.8.1 on an Inspiron 8000. It properly recognized my ethernet card and auto configured back at home. At home I was using a cable connection split using a router. Now, I'm at the University of Michigan (UM) and I tried to do an autoconfiguration but I can't seem to get on the network. UM basically requires you to register on a web site, and it records the card's MAC address. Based on that it gives you access.

On a Windows machine, trying to go to a web site instead loads up the UM registration page (if not already registered). I e-mailed UM tech support, but they say it's not Linux supported. This sounds like BS to me. Why couldn't I just do a network configuration and register using Linux? There is NO OS specific software to install to get on the network. Can anyone help me? Thanks any advance for any assistance.

Well I don't go to the University of Michigan, but I will ask anyway. Why not use a different machine to go to the website and enter in the mac address of the card in your machine, then take the config you get and set it up in Linux? Or does it not allow you to manually enter the mac address?

It doesn't let you manually enter the MAC, but I'm going to see if I can't get Konquerer to id itself as IE and if that'll work.

if mac is all that matters, put the nic in your windows machine, then register and put back in linux, then make linux box the router and hook whatever up. unless your idea works.

isnt an Inspiron 8000 a dell laptop? gonna be a bit hard to take the card out and transfer to a desktop!

unless its a pcmcia of course...
