I seem to recall you need a HOSTS file in your C:\windows directory; Microsoft has a file called HOSTS.SAM which is an example file. Copy HOSTS.SAM to HOSTS (whichever directory it is in) and then edit the file and add your Linux box IP address and host name.
As far as your second question goes, poke around your Network Properties; there will probably be options for setting duplex etc.
