UNABLE TO CONNECT TO ISP (debian, pppd, 2.6.13) - NO DAILTONE

pppd 2.4.3 started by root, uid 0
abort on (BUSY)
abort on (NO CARRIER)
abort on (VOICE)
abort on (NO DIALTONE)
abort on (NO DIAL TONE)
abort on (NO ANSWER)
abort on (DELAYED)
send (ATZ^M)
expect (OK)
ATZ^M^M
OK
-- got it
send (ATDT076322222^M)
expect (CONNECT)
^M
ATDT076322222^M^M
NO DIALTONE
-- failed
Failed (NO DIALTONE)
Exit.

So story goes like this:
I am using Debian Sarge! I have a winmodem and installed sl-modem-daemon! On 2.6.8 kernel I can connect to my ISP酒 (couple of them), but on 2.6.13 with the same setup I can配!
Winmodem work酒 good on either kernel! I can配 use KPPP or PPPD on 2.6.13 kernel.
This is not the first time i recompile kernel to my need酒 but it is first time i have this kind of problem!
What kind of /kernel/network choice in setup would have this kind of result: No DAILTONE?!?!?! Than酒 for help!

Have you recompiled sl-modem-daemon for the new kernel?
There are a lot of internal changes for ppp in the new kernel..

Yes I have!
A tried to reinstall sl-modem-daemon (modem is working), I have tried to "play" with modem commands...
Still everything is working under 2.6.8 and in 2.6.13 it doesn配!
I thik that it is kernel issue!

Does it have to do with "echo" from my computer to ISP酒 computer?! ISP doesn配 understand what my computer is saying?!

Depending on how you dialed/initiated the programmes, the "echo" is a terminal function for the user's benefit. They aren't sent to the ISP, just the terminal and/or modem as commands.
The "abort on xxx" come from the chat script and are only displayed coz the terminal echo is on.

I would say that the lack of dialtone is from an incorrect driver or driver setting. They would be looking for a dialtone modulation of ~425Hz or similar to that. An incorrect driver could set it to another frequency.
With a double phone adapter, make sure the modem is actually grabbing the line. Listen to dialtone in a second phone and for the dialtone level to drop when the modem seizes the line.
Also make sure the modem has actually hung up from the last attempt!

You Peter gave my an idea - drivers!
I read on debian.org about next release of Debian called "etch". It will come with kernel 2.6.12 (lets say?!). Now it is testing! Well i am on 2.6.13, I have downloaded libasound2 1.0.9 and libc6 2.3.5-1, and newer sl-modem-daemon 2.6.9d-7.

But now I can配 go to internet on 2.6.8 - hahaha!

Thank酒!
