The weirdest thing is happening to me, I explain myself
I am nowadays residing far from home, but before I left I prepared a ubuntu server (LTS 8.02), to which I can properly connect from my cellphone (jailbroken iphone 3.0 running openSSH), if I tether the connection to my laptop, the connection is also proper (even from outside the local area network).
The problem is, when I try to connect to the exact same server, with the exact same laptop, I get connection timed out, whether I try pingin it, ssh-ing or even telnet-ing it.
My home network consists in a server connect to a router connected to a modem, straight to the Internet. I have configured the router to redirect port 91 to the port to which ssh is listening, and it works from outside the local network with my phone.
Unlikely, because when I connect from my phone to my router it does just what it is suppossed, it reconnects justs fine, and it works perfectly, when I connect from elsewhere I type just the very same thing, I specify explicitly:
I trying to figure out where you problem lay, so your problem is you are not able to login at ssh at your laptop, even you are able to login from you iphone app.
maybe there would be a problem how your iphone tethering handle your NAT connection. This nat translation between the iphone and internet provider is the only difference between your iphone application and your laptop trying to reach the same server.
